How big is the sports web?

Sports is one of the larger consumer categories in our database of over 120 million domains. We measure it in two ways, because buyers ask two different questions: "which sites are about sport?" and "which sites touch sport at all?"

Strict view: sport is the main subject

2,565,405

Domains whose main IAB Content Taxonomy category (Tier 1) is Sports. This is the list most buyers want: club sites, leagues, sports media, equipment stores, academies, venues and fan sites.

Broad view: sport is one of the topics

2,872,482

Domains carrying the Sports & Recreation web filtering category anywhere in their list of categories. It adds national news portals with big sports sections, outdoor brands and general hobby sites.

The broad view matters for advertising reach. Among the 300,000 most popular domains, 14,010 are sports sites in the strict view, while 23,886 carry the Sports & Recreation tag, mostly because large news publishers run sports desks.

Top 10 sports websites

The ten best-known sports domains in the list, ordered by popularity among real users. Betting and unlicensed streaming domains are excluded from this public view; they stay in the file with their own labels.

#DomainSport (IAB Tier 2)Popularity bandWhat it covers
1espn.comMulti-sportTop 1,000US sports media: news, scores, video and fantasy games across all major leagues.
2espncricinfo.comCricketTop 1,000Cricket scores, statistics and news, with a very large audience in South Asia.
3skysports.comMulti-sportTop 1,000UK sports broadcaster site with football, cricket, Formula 1 and golf coverage.
4cricbuzz.comCricketTop 1,000Live cricket commentary and scorecards, popular on mobile.
5sofascore.comSoccerTop 1,000Live scores and player ratings for football and many other sports.
6flashscore.comSoccerTop 1,000Fast live results service with deep coverage of football leagues worldwide.
7nba.comBasketball1,001 to 5,000Official league site with games, standings and highlights.
8mlb.comBaseball1,001 to 5,000Official baseball league site with live game data and team pages.
9nfl.comAmerican Football1,001 to 5,000Official American football league site with schedules, news and video.
10olympics.comOlympic Sports1,001 to 5,000Olympic movement site covering the Games, athletes and results.
Notice the pattern: live score services and cricket media reach the very top band, ahead of the US league sites. A sports list that only covers English-language leagues misses a large part of where sports traffic really goes. For other categories, see the top 100 websites by category.

Sports website subcategories (IAB Tier 2)

84% of sports domains also carry a Tier 2 sport, so you can build a list for one sport instead of the whole category. Counts below are full-database totals. Bars show the share of all sports domains.

Sports websites by country

Sport is local. A football club, a riding school or a tennis academy serves one town, and its website usually sits on a country domain. That makes the country angle unusually strong for this category.

Many sports sites also live on .com and .org. For market-level lists we combine the country field with the domain ending, so a German club on .com is still found. See the full picture on the Germany domains and United Kingdom domains pages.

Types of sports websites in the list

The IAB sport tells you which sport a site is about. Buyers also want to know what kind of site it is. These are the main site types you will find inside the sports category, and how they behave as targets.

Clubs and teams

The long tail of the category. Amateur and semi-professional clubs with fixtures, membership forms and sponsor pages. Small traffic each, huge numbers together, almost always local.

Leagues and federations

National and regional governing bodies, league offices and tournament organisers. Few in number, high authority, and often the first stop for sponsorship research.

Sports media

Dedicated sports news, blogs, podcasts and video channels. The core of most contextual advertising lists because they carry large, engaged audiences.

Live scores and statistics

Results services, stats databases and fantasy tools. Very high visit frequency, mostly on mobile, with fans checking scores several times a day.

Retail and equipment

Sporting goods stores, brand sites and specialist shops for bikes, golf, fishing or skiing. The best segment for shopping and affiliate campaigns.

Venues, camps and schools

Stadiums, gyms, golf courses, ski schools, riding stables and summer camps. Good lead lists for booking, payment and facility software.

How popular are sports websites?

Among the 300,000 most popular domains, sports sites spread across the popularity bands like this. Most live in the long middle, which is why reach campaigns need thousands of sports domains, not dozens.

Top 1,00033Global sports media, live score leaders, cricket portals

Who buys a list of sports websites, and why

Sports lists are bought by teams who need to find, target or exclude sports content at scale. These are the most common uses we see.

Advertisers and agencies

Build contextual inclusion lists for sports brands, betting-free campaigns or event sponsors.

  • Target one sport, such as golf or cycling
  • Split by country for local launches
  • Exclude gambling-adjacent sites

Adtech platforms

Label bid requests and publisher inventory with sports categories for contextual targeting.

  • IAB tiers for seller-defined audiences
  • Popularity bands for inventory tiers

Affiliate and sponsorship teams

Find clubs, blogs and media that could promote sports products or events.

  • Equipment and sporting goods partners
  • Club and league outreach lists

Market researchers

Size a sport in a country by counting its websites, or follow how a sport grows across markets.

  • Sport-by-country matrices
  • Club density per market

Sales and lead generation

Sports software vendors (club management, ticketing, booking) use the list to find prospects. See lead generation and sales intelligence.

  • Clubs and academies by country
  • Venues and event organisers

Network and safety teams

Schools, workplaces and family apps allow or limit sports and live score sites by category, while blocking betting.

  • Sports allowed, gambling blocked
  • Separate live streaming rules

Columns in the sports website list

Every row is one domain. The sports list uses the same columns as the full database, so it joins cleanly with any other segment you license. The full field guide is on the taxonomy page.

What makes a good sports website list

A raw domain dump is not a usable list. These are the checks that decide whether a sports list works in a campaign, a model or a sales tool.

What we do

  • Categorize every site from its own content, reviewed and validated
  • Separate betting from sport, so a sports list is not a gambling list
  • Keep multi-category sites (news with sport sections) out of the strict view
  • Recheck new domains after launch, because many sites add content later
  • Refresh all other domains every month

Questions to ask any vendor

  • Is the count based on site content or on keywords in the domain name?
  • Can I filter by one sport, not just "sports"?
  • Are parked and for-sale domains removed?
  • Is there a popularity signal to rank the list?
  • Does the file use a standard taxonomy my systems already read?

You can test any domain yourself with the domain category checker before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

How many sports websites are there?

Our database holds 2,565,405 domains whose main IAB category is Sports, and 2,872,482 domains that carry the Sports & Recreation web filtering category as one of their categories.

Which sports have the most websites?

By IAB Tier 2, the largest sports groups are Sports Equipment (220,465 domains), Soccer (184,410), Extreme Sports (181,232), Equine Sports (132,378), Martial Arts (128,095) and Cycling (117,466).

Does the sports list include betting sites?

Sports betting and poker sites sit in their own IAB subcategory with 201,105 domains and also carry the Gambling web filtering category. You can include them, exclude them, or receive them as a separate file.

Can I get sports websites for one country only?

Yes. Every row has a country field where it is known and a country-code domain ending, so you can filter to one market or a group of markets.

Can I get a list of websites for one sport, such as golf or cycling?

Yes. The IAB Tier 2 and Tier 3 columns let you cut the list down to one sport, for example Golf with 80,473 domains or Cycling with 117,466 domains.

How are the websites ranked?

Popular domains carry a global popularity band and, where available, a country popularity band, based on popularity among real users. You can sort by these bands to put the most visited sports sites first.

In what format is the list delivered?

The list is delivered as a downloadable file in CSV, with Parquet and JSON available, so it loads into spreadsheets, databases and data pipelines.

Are gyms and fitness websites part of the sports list?

In the IAB taxonomy, fitness sits under Healthy Living, not Sports. The database holds 580,523 domains in Healthy Living > Fitness and Exercise. Many buyers add them to a sports list for wider reach, and we can deliver both segments in one file.

Do IAB 2 and IAB 3 count sports the same way?

Almost. Sports is a Tier 1 category in both versions, with 2,565,396 domains in IAB 2 and 2,565,405 in IAB 3. Both columns are on every row, so you can work in whichever version your platform reads. The IAB 3.0 vs 3.1 comparison explains the newer changes.

Can I use the list to find sports clubs as sales leads?

Yes. Filter to clubs and academies in one country, then rank them by popularity band. Each row is a domain, so you can match it to your own CRM or enrichment tools.

How do I buy the full list of sports websites?

Go to the pricing page, choose the database size that fits, and tell us if you only need the sports segment. The sports rows are part of the full categorized database.
