Mobile App Database

IAB 3.0 categories for 1 million mobile apps

Every app is keyed by its bundle ID and App Store ID and comes with an IAB Content Taxonomy 3.0 category, a web filtering category, its developer and its age rating. Join it to bid requests, SDK data or device inventories in one step.

Apps are named by bundle ID, not by domain

In-app inventory reaches ad platforms with a bundle ID in the request. SDK events, app usage panels and device management logs identify apps the same way. A domain database cannot classify any of that, because there is no domain in the record.

This database gives each bundle ID the categories you already use for websites: IAB Content Taxonomy 3.0 for advertising and analytics, plus the web filtering taxonomy of our 120 million domain database. Web and app data finally land in the same categories.

How the categories were assigned

From the listing

Each app was read from its App Store listing: name, bundle ID, Apple genre and description.

Nearest IAB categories

A language model describes the app in IAB terms, the text is matched to the 10 closest of the 703 IAB 3.0 categories, and the model picks the best of them.

Cross-checked

The web filtering category is chosen separately, and sensitive categories such as gambling, adult content and alcohol are cross-checked between the two taxonomies.

Categories are assigned by AI, not by hand. Corrections you send us go into the next update file. Apps that are not in the database can be categorized on demand through the Mobile App Categorization API.

Questions

What is the key of the database?

The iOS bundle ID and the App Store ID, the identifiers that appear in in-app ad requests, SDK data and device inventories. Matched Android apps add their Google Play package name.

Which IAB version is used?

The IAB Content Taxonomy 3.0, with the full path from tier 1 down to the most specific level that fits the app.

How were Android apps matched?

Through shared package names and developer websites between the App Store and Google Play. Only high-confidence matches are in the database: 428,000 package names. Android-only apps are not covered yet.

Does it join to your domain database?

Yes. The developer_domain column is a registered domain, the same key our 120 million domain database uses, so you can bring in the developer's website category as well.

Can we use the data in a product we sell?

Yes, with a commercial licence from $10,000 per year, which includes a daily feed of new apps.
